BIO
Early Life and Influences
J. Isaak was born into a family rich in creativity and entrepreneurship. His father, a Bahamian musician and multifaceted artist, collaborated with legends like Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, and other Motown artists, earning a Grammy nomination for his contributions. Beyond music, he created animated projects such as Cocomon and Fruity Tunes, which premiered in theaters across the Bahamas. His mother was a member of a Christian rap group, further immersing J. Isaak in a diverse musical environment from a young age.
Growing up, J. Isaak was encouraged to explore various artistic avenues. He began playing drums in church, took acting, singing, and dancing classes, and even auditioned for The Lion King on Broadway, reaching the final rounds for both the main production and the West Coast tour. At around 10 or 11 years old, his father wrote and produced his first song, "My Dad," which garnered approximately 20,000 views on YouTube and Instagram during the platforms' early days. His father also brought him onstage to perform, writing raps for him to deliver, laying the foundation for his future in music.
Middle School Years
During middle school, J. Isaak began laying the foundation for his performance career. He joined the prestigious Washington Performing Arts Society’s Children of the Gospel Choir alongside his cousin, an experience that took him to world-renowned stages including the Kennedy Center. These formative years honed his vocal and live performance skills while nurturing a deep passion for music and the arts.
In addition to choir, J. Isaak explored various artistic outlets—joining his school’s jazz band and participating in major theater productions such as Gypsy and Back to the 80’s, further developing his versatility as a performer and creative storyteller.
High School Years
In his freshman year at West Orange High School, J. Isaak became a standout member of the award-winning AB-SALUTE Step Team, which captured both state and national championship titles. Demonstrating early leadership and initiative, he went on to found his own step team, Storm of the Century (SOTC), during his sophomore year. Under his leadership, SOTC performed at events across New Jersey and achieved a major victory at the McDonald’s Gospel Fest, performing live at the Prudential Center in front of an audience of over 17,000 people.
Around this time, his father began exposing him to professional recording environments, taking him to legendary Quad Studios, where he connected with industry veteran Free Smith. He also made his first visit to Engine Room Audio, where he met influential figures Scott Lee and Mark Christensen, sparking his long-term interest in audio engineering and music production.
During his junior year, J. Isaak transitioned to homeschooling, creating space to further pursue his creative passions. He participated in a prestigious theater program at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, deepening his understanding of performance arts and refining his craft.
By age 18, he achieved third place in the New Jersey Shout Down Drugs Competition with an original song promoting positive lifestyle choices. That same year, he earned an Honorable Mention in the speech and essay contest associated with the film Selma, resulting in his work being featured at the historic Liberty Bell Museum.
Throughout high school, J. Isaak also gained valuable behind-the-scenes industry experience, working as a runner at the Prudential Center. In this role, he managed talent riders and assisted with backstage operations for major tours and events, supporting high-profile acts such as WWE, Ed Sheeran, and Katy Perry. These experiences offered a firsthand look into large-scale event production and artist relations, preparing him for his future career in entertainment.
Disney Dreamers Academy and Early Music Releases
In 2015, J. Isaak was selected to attend the Disney Dreamers Academy, where he was honored as "Dreamer of the Year" by his peers. This recognition led to his role as a brand ambassador for Disney, representing the company at events like the Essence Festival and the Hoodie Awards, and promoting the academy's mission.
That same year, he released his first mixtape, Freshman Orientation, featuring tracks like "Konfess" and "Life is Good." These songs debuted on Sway in the Morning, where he also participated in an interview and premiered the music video for "Relapse." He followed up with the release of "Konfess" and its accompanying video to further promote his mixtape.
Post-High School Education and Artistic Ventures
After high school, J. Isaak enrolled at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) to study acting. Excelling academically, he was at the top of his class for two semesters before opting to pursue private coaching with his professors. He also participated in a Shakespeare program at Juilliard, further refining his theatrical skills.
During this period, he ventured into the art world by interning with Bahamian artist Tavares Strachan at his showroom in Chelsea, New York. This experience provided exposure to the fine art scene and expanded his creative horizons. Simultaneously, he delved into the fashion industry, collaborating with emerging brands such as Arthur Christine, Skateboard Sushi, AIPM, and Vitlefant.
J. Isaak co-founded GIVYN TAYK, a boutique consignment shop, alongside his fashion mentor. The store featured an extensive collection of designer pieces from brands like Raf Simons, Rick Owens, Louis Vuitton, and Vivienne Westwood, alongside in-house brands like Skateboard Sushi and Arthur Christine. GIVYN TAYK became a hub for fashion enthusiasts, hosting private events that fostered a community of designers, artists, and aficionados.
Initial Breakthroughs and Early Releases
J. Isaak’s second full-length project, Freshman Graduation, marked his entrance into the independent music scene. Entirely self-released and self-promoted, the project was supported by the standout singles “Awake” and “Pardon Da Kidd,” both of which debuted on Sway’s Universe.
To support the release, J. Isaak organized and booked his first independent tour, The Pomp & Circumstance Tour, building his grassroots following one city at a time. During this period, he developed a reputation as a self-sufficient creative who could ideate, produce, and execute projects from top to bottom.
Simultaneously, he attracted attention from the fashion world. He was featured in luxury campaigns for Hublot & Berluti, and later selected for a Jägermeister online merchandise campaign—early signs of his ability to blur the lines between music, fashion, and branding.
